Leslie Agyare: From England to Ghana’s Cacao Fields

Three Mountains Cocoa started with Leslie Agyare’s reconnection to family history. Living in England, he couldn’t find dairy-free hot chocolate that felt authentic. This led him back to Ghana, to Asante Akim South, where he rediscovered family heritage and a phenomenal group of cocoa communities.

In 2020, Leslie founded Three Mountains Cocoa, a cooperative focused on sustainable organic farming. By promoting organic practices and regenerative agriculture, the cooperative helps farmers improve their craft and access specialty markets. Under Leslie’s leadership, farmers now use methods that improve their family health, respect the environment, all while producing exceptional cacao. In Ghana, social premiums/certifications bring approximately $200-300 of premium, whereas organic certified cocoa warrants $600 per metric ton.

Cacao and the Environment

Leslie’s commitment to health and wellness has impacted the way TMC farmers see their crops. Farmers have noticed their health improving after a few years of organic production. They also see their farms transformed – Amma, one grower, shared that she was thrilled to see wild mushrooms growing on her farm again.

At Three Mountains, farming works with nature, not against it. Practices like reforestation and biodiversity-focused farming keep the land healthy. These efforts protect the forest while ensuring the soil stays rich and productive. It’s a balance that benefits both the land and the farmers.

More than Farming

Cacao farming in Ghana is about more than just growing beans. It’s driving change. Reforestation projects restore the land. Education programs empower future generations. Women farmers gain new opportunities, stepping into leadership roles and improving their economic independence. These efforts build stronger, more resilient communities.
